WHAT IS PAN?

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a laminated card, by the Income Tax Department, to any "person" who applies for it or to whom the department allots the number without an application.

PAN enables the department to link all transactions of the "person" with the department. These transactions include tax payments, TDS/TCS credits, returns of income, specified transactions, correspondence, and so on. PAN, thus, acts as an identifier for the "person" with the tax department.

PAN was introduced to facilitates linking of various documents, including payment of taxes, assessment, tax demand, tax arrears etc. relating to an assessee, to facilitate easy retrieval of information and to facilitate matching of information relating to investment, raising of loans and other business activities of taxpayers collected through various sources, both internal as well as external, for detecting and combating tax evasion and widening of tax base.




A typical PAN is AFZPK7190K.

First three characters i.e. "AFZ" in the above PAN are alphabetic series running from

AAA to ZZZ

Fourth character of PAN i.e. "P" in the above PAN represents the status of the PAN holder. "P" stands for Individual, "F" stands for Firm, "C" stands for Company, "H" stands for HUF, "A" stands for AOP, "T" stands for TRUST etc.

Fifth character i.e. "K" in the above PAN represents first character of the PAN holder's last name/surname.

Next four characters i.e. "7190" in the above PAN are sequential number running from 0001 to 9999.



Last character i.e. "K" in the above PAN is an alphabetic check digit.

Deadline for Linking PAN Card and Aadhaar Card is 31 March 2023

The last date the link the PAN and Aadhaar has been extended to 31 March 2023. However, individuals who do not link their Aadhaar and PAN by 31 March 2022 will have to pay a fine. The fine will be Rs.500 if the PAN and Aadhaar are linked by 30 June 2022. The fine will be Rs.1,000 if the linking is done between 1 July 2022 and 31 March 2023.

  • Log onto Income Tax Department e-Filing website.
  • Click on “Register Yourself” & Enter your PAN Card number
  • Fill up the Registration Form and submit it.
  • A link will be sent to your email address. Click on this link to activate your account.
  • Visit https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/UserLogin/LoginHome.html to Enter your account and click on “My Account”.
  • Go to Profile Settings and click on PAN Details
  • Your details will be generated. You will receive the name, area code, jurisdiction, address and other information.


PAN Card Details by Name and Date of Birth

To search for PAN card details by name and date of birth, you can follow the steps given below:
  • Visit the Income Tax department’s official e-filing website
  • Go to the section called ‘'Quick Links’'
  • Click on ‘'Know Your PAN’'
  • Enter your first name, middle name, surname, gender, date of birth, status, mobile number, etc.
  • An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number linked to your PAN card
  • Enter the OTP
  • Click on ‘'Validate’'
  • Enter your father’s name
  • Click on ‘'Submit’'
  • Your PAN number will be displayed on the screen with the relevant details


Search PAN Card Details by PAN Number

You can easily search for their PAN card details by PAN number following the below-mentioned steps:

  • Step 1: Log in to Income Tax Department official website
  • Step 2: Click “Register Yourself” and enter PAN number
  • Step 3: Enter the relevant details carefully and then click “Submit”
  • Step 4: You will receive a link on your mail address regarding the activation of the account
  • Step 5: Go to “My Account”
  • Step 6: Click on “PAN Details” under the section “Profile Settings”
  • Step 7: All the information regarding the PAN card will be displayed on the screen. It includes Name, Address, Area Code, Jurisdiction and other details.


How to Check PAN Card Status Without an Acknowledgement Number

TIN-NSDL has made ample provisions for applicants to track PAN card status online. The portal allows users to check new or duplicate PAN card status without acknowledgement number as well. One can check the NSDL PAN card status by name and date of birth by following the steps mentioned below:
  • Visit the official TIN-NSDL portal
  • Select “PAN – New/Change Request” in the Application Type section
  • Select the Name section to check PAN card status without acknowledgement number
  • Enter your Last Name, First Name, Middle Name and Date of Birth
  • Now click on the “Submit” button to get the PAN card status


Check PAN Card Status through Name and Date of Birth

As of now, there’s no such procedure to check your PAN Card transaction status or application status by Date of Birth only, but you can check your PAN Card details by verifying your PAN by entering name and date of birth by following the steps mentioned below:

  • Step 1: Go to the official website of Income Tax E-Filing at https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home
  • Step 2: Select ‘Verify your PAN Details’ under section “Quick Links”
  • Step 3: Enter details like your PAN, full name, date of birth and select the status as applicable
  • Step 4: Enter the Captcha code to verify the details and click on “Submit”
  • A new page will appear on the screen showing “Your PAN is Active and the details are matching with PAN Database”.


Track your PAN Card Application Status Using Call

You can track PAN Card Status by mobile number/telephone. It is also a simple method of tracking the PAN application. In this method, the applicant has to call the call centre of TIN on 020-27218080 in order to get an update about the current application status of the PAN card by providing the 15-digit acknowledgement number.


How to Check PAN Card Application Status Using SMS Service

You can check your PAN card status by the facility of SMS. You can check your new or lost PAN card status within the stipulated time period but after 3 days of submission of the application form. In this method, you are required to send an SMS which is – “NSDLPAN” after which there should be the 15-digit acknowledgement number and it should be sent to “57575”. You will shortly receive an SMS regarding your PAN Card Status.

How to Check the e-PAN Card Status by Aadhaar Number

Follow the steps mentioned below to check ePAN card status through Aadhaar Number:

  • Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filing website or directly click on the link
  • Step 2: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar Number and captcha code
  • Step 3: Click on the ‘Submit’ button
  • Step 4: The status of your PAN Card through Aadhaar Number will be displayed on the screen
